Greets people,

Is anyone here familiar with any aiki-jujutsu dojos in New York City?
I have happened upon a school in The Bronx called Kastugo-Ryu
Aiki-Jujutsu, which is headed by Shihan Joseph Torres, 10th Dan.

Is anyone familiar with this teacher/system? His teaching is
advertised solely as aiki-jujutsu, with no mention or reference of
Daito-Ryu. As far as technique goes, it seems to be very thorough and
traditional; lessons are intense and emphasize attention to details,
especially stance, motion, and employment of ki. Based upon my
knowledge and observations, his technique also seems to be very
traditional, emphasizing foundational jujutsu concepts such as atemi
and joint manipulation while encompassing aiki techniques. Although I
am not an expert, some of the lessons I observed being taught were
circular blocking & redirection, moving the opponent around the body
and accelerated throws. I also witnessed some impressive atemi methods
which emphasize a close combat approach utilizing the forearms, elbows
and hands.

Weaponry is also a part of this teacher's curriculum, as I have seen
his students execute some very proficient free forms with both the
sword and bo. The sword techinques displayed seem to focus around
fighting multiple opponents, with many of the cuts being executed in a
vertical fashion. From the quick demo I saw, this was facilitated by
turning the wrists during the strike, which in turn rotates the blade
so that the cutting edge is always facing towards the opponent
througout the entire motion.

Anyone ever hear of this individual, or have any further information
on him? As a student of the martial arts, I've made it a priority to
find the highest quality teacher possible, and I don't waste time with
idle candidates. From what I have seen, Grandmaster Torres' technique
looks very solid.

Any information or feedback is most welcome.

Osu,
Slick

  1. As far as I'm concern this is, without a doubt Bullshido. Not only does the supposed master of the school not have his certificates in the ART of Aiki Jujitsu, the school has no lineage unlike other famous schools " One being Tremont School for JUDO and KARATE. " Fraud, steer clear of this school at all cost; you're better off going to Karate USA or Excel Martial arts.

  2. I am a long time student of GRANDMASTER TORRES.. HE IS AN INCREDIBLE TEACHER AND THE ART KATSUGO RYU AIKI JUJITSU IS BY FAR THE MOST PHILOSOPHICAL AND DEADLY ART AVAILABLE.. COMING FROM EXPERIENCE... I THINK HE IS THE DEADLIEST MARTIAL ARTISTS IN THE WORLD. HE IS ALSO IN THE HALL OF FAME...

  3. I am also one of his long time students, but I can also agree that he is BULLSHIDO. I earned my black belt under him in 08, but because of his stupid and ass backwards superstitions never received a diploma. Not that it would matter anyway because the one chance we had at being recognized by an accredited association was flushed down the tubes because of his unwillingness to travel with students to perform a demonstration/seminar and to pay an initiation fee. But not to worry he’s been unable to sell his snake oil to anyone else, no more students and no school is willing to take him on.

THEY ALSO HAVE A DIPLOMA FOR THEIR BLACK BELTS AND EVERY DAN THAT THEY EARNED AFTER LEADING UP TO THEIR MASTERS BELT.. SORRY YOU WHERE NOT WORTHY ENOUGH TO EARN YOUR DIPLOMA. THEIR MUST HAVE BEEN A VERY GOOD REASON YOU DID NOT EARN IT.. I ALSO HAVE MY DIPLOMA...

  5. I do not know this person nor have I ever trained with him so I make no evaluation on his technique or knowledge. When I lived in NY (having the same name as him), I had several people over the years approach me thinking I was him and that I was full of sh-t.
Again, I’m not saying if the guy is good or not as I have never trained with him. I have been training for 36 years and teaching for 15. I get my Shihan license next year from Japan but to be a true Shihan, it has to come from a legitimate recognized organization. That being said, rank isn’t everything. I have met people who call themselves Shihan when they reach Yondan since shi means 4. To reach 10 th Dan, you either make it up yourself or you are given it from an organization (usually a Soke or Grandmaster) as it is an honorary rank. To be a Grandmaster, again you need to be given that title by an organization (usually holding the scroll for the style). To be a Shihan, 10 th Dan and Grandmaster makes it sound fake as you would usually only be one of them). To say you believe he is the best or most deadly martial artist in the world is rediculous. Although I appreciate your loyalty to your instructor as many of my students do for me, I have actually trained with one of the deadliest martial artist in the world (Grandmaster Shoto Tanemura) and to make that statement, you must have traveled the world and been exposed to different arts and instructors.

  8. I was a student and he was a weird teacher. He seemed to like to teach young kids and at times use to touch them in weird ways. At one time, he made kids practice in their under wear and he thought it was funny. He is a fraud and a weirdo.

  9. He farted and shitted once in front of the class. He did not clean it up and made the students practice with it. It was a tense day because it was also graduation and he forgot the medals and belts. So he took tie raps and wrapped it around peoples wrist and pulled his pants down and showed us his ass. He said congrats. It was nasty. Such a fool and nasty!

  10. I was a student and he was disgusting and a pig. He would touch me in weird ways. If I was trying to do kicks, he would touch my dick and tell me that I needed to free myself before I can make high kicks. Then one day he touched my friends butt and later, he fucked her. She was only 18 years old. He then use to make dinners during the holidays and walk around with no pants on. He said he is living the life style his family did. They were Indian he said. He was just a weird person. He had a friend who worked in the movie theater and he said he use to fuck him. Nasty pic!
